New Doha International Airport inauguration by year end

Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) says the New Doha International Airport is scheduled to be inaugurated by year end.

The massive 22km2 multi billion dollar airport is designed to handle 50 million passengers annually, making it three times the size of the current airport with six times the capacity.
With a spiralling budget estimated now at US $12 billion (previously it was $5.5 billion), the first phase of the airport is expected to be inaugurated by year end.

This will comprise of two runways and a 13,000m2 terminal, 24 gates and the capacity to handle 12 million passengers per year. Phase 3 is due to be completed in 2015.

“We are hoping that the new airport would be opened on Qatar’s National Day on December 18, QCAA chairman and managing director Abdulaziz al-Noaimi told reporters. While the airport may be opened by then, it will only become fully operational “later”.

Al-Noaimi said that about 80% of the project works had already been completed.
