Smartphone sales overtake the PC sales for the first time

Smartphone sales overtake the PC sales for the first time in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2010. The users have chosen smartphone as their new personal computer. According to the research agency International Data Corporation (IDC), the shipment of smartphone was 100.9 Million devices in the fourth quarter of 2010.In 2009, 53.9 Million smartphones were consumed and the selling has increased by 87.2 percent in 2010.The smartphone have surpassed PC s in terms of number of the units shipped in a quarter.

Nokia can be counted as one of the top Smartphone maker who had sold out 28.3 Million smartphones in Q4. They have increased the selling rate by 36.1 percent from the prior year. However, Apple iPhone is growing widely by 86.2 percent .RIM came in the third position in Q4 with 36.4 percent growth to 14.6 Million units sold. Samsung and HTC come in the fourth and the fifth position by selling 9.7 Million and 8.6 Million devices in the Q4 respectively. The other Smartphone makers are also expanding their market by 23.5 Million units.

IDC have also mentioned about operating systems, Nokia’s Symbian 3 and Windows phone 7 helped to add to the global market share of smartphones.

Ramon Liamas, Senior Research Analyst with IDC‘s mobile phone technology and trend team ,explained that Android continues to gain by leaps and bounds, helping to drive the smartphone market .It has become the cornerstone of multiple vendors' smartphone strategies, and has quickly become a challenger to market leader Symbian. Although Symbian has the backing of market leader Nokia, Android has multiple vendors, including HTC, LG Electronics, Motorola, Samsung and a growing list of companies deploying Android on their devices."
