Top 10 passenger Airports : Jan-June 2010

1. Atlanta
Passengers: 43,431,596
Year on year growth: 0.9%
Total aircraft movements: 470,725
Year on year growth: -1.3%
About: Its position as a hub airport for domestic US traffic makes Atlanta the world’s busiest passenger airport. The airport’s traffic peaked at 90 million passengers and 978,824 flights in calendar 2008. These latest figures indicate that a return to that level of traffic might not be too far away.
 
2. Beijing
Passengers: 35,035,401
Year on year growth: 13.0%
Total aircraft movements: 251,607
Year on year growth: 5.7%
About: Just a couple of years ago, Beijing was fifth on this list. Propelled by the country’s economic growth, it continues to handle more and more passengers. China has emerged from the global recession almost unscathed, but this year’s growth in passengers and aircraft movements is still impressive.

3. Chicago

Year on year growth: 1.9%
Total aircraft movements: 427,107
Year on year growth: 4.5%
About: The airport has some way to go before passenger numbers return to the level of 70 million in 2008. Nevertheless, the airport handled the third highest number of passengers in the first half and its appeal as a hub airport will ensure it continues to do well. A multi-billion dollar redevelopment project, designed to increase capacity and reduce delays caused by bad weather, is ongoing.

4. London Heathrow

Year on year growth: -3.5%
Total aircraft movements: 218,582
Year on year growth: -6.1%
About: The economic recession in Europe has hit traffic at Heathrow, but it still remains Europe’s busiest airports by number of passengers. The opening of a new terminal in 2008 has helped increase capacity, but future growth could be hampered by continued argument over construction of a new runway.

5. Tokyo

Year on year growth: 3.5%
Total aircraft movements: 166,254
Year on year growth: 0.0%
About: Japan’s economy may have been struggling, but Tokyo still posted year on year growth in passenger numbers in the first half of 2010. It also missed out on fourth place in this list by only a few thousand passengers.

6. Los Angeles
Passengers: 28,192,028
Year on year growth: 4.6%
Total aircraft movements: 284,572
Year on year growth: 5.8%
About: It is often said that California would be one of the world’s top ten economies if it were a country. It is perhaps no surprise, therefore, that it has one of the world’s top ten airports. Nevertheless, year on year passenger growth of 4.6% in the first half is still impressive, especially compared to the other US airports in this list. LAX, as many refer to it, is a major hub for United, Alaska and American Airlines and is a key destination for Southwest, Qantas and Virgin.

7. Dallas Fort Worth
Passengers: 27,620,260
Year on year growth: 1.1%
Total aircraft movements: 321,155
Year on year growth: 2.9%
About: Dallas Fort Worth is the major airport hub of American Airlines, which flew 19.5 million international passengers and 66 million domestic passengers in 2009. Located in the state of Texas, it was the eighth busiest passenger airport in the world in 2009, so is currently on track to move up one place in 2010.

8. Paris
Passengers: 27,137,438
Year on year growth: -1.9%
Total aircraft movements: 242,152
Year on year growth: -7.9%
About: Passenger traffic dropped 1.9% in the first half, but Paris’ position as one of the world’s top ten airports seems assured with the status of Air France. The French flag carrier flew 48 million domestic and international passengers in 2009, making it one of the world’s ten largest airlines.

9. Denver
Passengers: 25,166,098
Year on year growth: 3.4%
Total aircraft movements: 300,000 estimate
Year on year growth: NA
About: The presence of a fifth US airport on this list demonstrates the size of the country’s domestic aviation market. Denver claims to be the largest airport by land area in the US and it acts as the main hub for Frontier Airlines and Great Lakes Airlines as well as a major hub for United Airlines and Southwest. It uses solar panels to generate a portion of its energy and is known for the various works of art dotted around its buildings.

10. Frankfurt
Passengers: 24,492,562
Year on year growth: 1.4%
Total aircraft movements: 223,757
Year on year growth: -1.8%
About: Germany’s busiest passenger airport served more than 24 million passengers in the first half, making it the only European airport in the top 10 to experience growth. It is located at the heart of the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region, a heavily populated and prosperous area with strong transport links to other parts of Europe. In anticipation of future growth, work has been done to accommodate the A380 and a fourth runway is scheduled to go into service next year.
