With the inclusion of the new members, the total U.S. membership has touched the 2,290 mark, with the number of foreign associates touching 202 mark. The Academy membership honours those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature". It also honours those also who have contributed to the "pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

For his contributions to oil and gas recovery through application of surface science and thermodynamics, Abbas Firoozabadi, senior scientist and director, Reservoir Engineering Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, was elected as a new member. Asad M. Madni, who is a retired President and Chief Technical Officer, BEI Technologies and independent consultant in Los Angeles, was elected a new member for his contributions to the development and commercialization of sensors and systems for aerospace and automotive safety.

Jitendra Malik, Arthur J.
