Microsoft confident of IE9

Compared to Firefox 4, the statistics is nothing. But Microsoft is confident that its web browser Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) is a thing of substance and it has got a huge response.

Speaking at the Teched India 2011 Keynote here on Thursday, Brain Hall, general manager, Internet Explorer and Windows live, Microsoft said that IE9 witnessed around 2.3 million downloads within 24 hours of its launch. But the Software major is racing against Mozilla's Firefox, which had over 7 million downloads in 24 hours, and racing towards 15 million downloads as of now, thus causing worry for Microsoft.

IE 9 reaches India

Microsoft also announced that Internet Explorer 9 is now available for the users in India. It claimed that IE9, using full capabilities of Windows and hardware, enables a Web that is faster, cleaner and more trusted by default.

The software giant says a substantial percentage of users are still hooked to IE6.

“Around 12 per cent people still use IE6, which is 9 per cent less than previous year. And this is surprising as IE6 is a decade-old technology,” he added. “We are doing a lot of things to move people on IE9."

He shared that, out of this pie, 5.9 per cent comes from Mainland China, and 0.4 per cent from India. He added that Microsoft plans to follow a gradual method too, since all the IE6 users are working on XP operating system. To such users, Microsoft would advocate the use of IE8, to give them an idea of the latest features and tool that come with IE8.

Slowly, once the customers move to the latest versions, from there they could go for a complete refresh with the new operating system and the entire suite of Microsoft products with that, or just upgrade their operating system.

Brain shared that in the next few months, IE8 users would get the options for auto upgrading to IE9.
