Mobile theft, a significant issue for Indians today

A survey which was conducted across eight major cities in India on mobile phone found that one in every two mobile phone users are a prey to mobile theft. An e-security company which conducted the survey in New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad said that victims of mobile theft stand to lose crucial personal and confidential information as a number of users use their mobile phones for online shopping, banking and other official and personal communication.

Out of the 500 people who were interviewed, 18 percent were of the age group of 45 to 54, 25 percent were between 35 to 44, 32 percent were 25 to 34, and 25 percent were 18 to 24. 53 percent of them claimed to be the prey of mobile thefts. 77 percent owned standard mobile phones while 23 percent were owners of smart phones with an average of nine free applications and three paid applications.

77 percent of the people said that the worst part of losing their cell phones was the loss of contact information and 74 percent of them said that they could neither remotely block nor wipe the phone's memory after it was lost or stolen. Every one out of two victims said that the loss of information was a biggest concern for them. In fact in exchange for their mobile phones females said that they would get a root canal done while men said that they were ready to drink stale milk for their mobile phones.

The survey also revealed that half of the victims were ready to pay a ransom of 3,692 to resolve the situation or retain the mobile phone. However, 82 percent of them found the process of resolving the situation difficult and 90 percent found the experience stressful.
