At a special campus placement activity 14 Tihar Jail inmates land up receiving job letters from private firms. 46 candidates were interviewed by eight companies, out of which 14 got selected in the final round. Others are also enthusiastic of getting through some companies in next couple of days. The appointment letter not only assured them of earning a livelihood for themselves but it also provided them a pleasure of earning a decent reputation in the society as well.
Sandeep Bhatnagar, 40 years old, who is under trial in Tihar jail for past 5 years says, "This is not just an appointment letter. It is an assurance of a rehabilitated life in society which would have otherwise may be shunned me. I can now hope for a speedy acquittal by sending this letter to the court to convince them to acquit me soon. I can assure my wife and children of a decent life in Delhi." Bhatnagar is accused of robbing the bank by dressing up like human bomb.
Neeraj Kumar, Deputy General, Tihar Jail said, "These 46 inmates were chosen for placement as they fulfilled three criteria. They had impeccable conduct inside the jail where they utilized their time to gain education and vocational skills. Two, they all expect to be released within a year or so, and three, they were keen to rehabilitate themselves and lead a new life."
Among the companies who came for the exceptional placements was Agrawal packers and movers. Agarwal Packers and Movers picked up seven inmates for positions such as marketing executive, assistant manager, supervisor and data entry operator. Vedanta Foundation and Good House Keeping recruited two inmates each. Sunil Gupta, Tihar Law Officer said that 100 percent placement is expected. Rest of the inmates will get the offer letters very soon. Many of the inmates have completed their education from school level to degree levels while serving their term in jail.
Dilip Kumar, 26 year old, who is serving for last 16 years says, "After I was sent to jail, it was a painful and stressful time for me as I had no idea what to do next. However, I was motivated inside the jail by officials and NGOs. I studied day and night to finish 10 years of education in five years. Now I am assisting a Supreme Court lawyer Michael Peter and preparing for civil services. Michael fought my case and has been a great help." Dilip hails from Madhubani, Bihar and got arrested under narcotics Act. He is acquitted after fighting the case for years and will finish his Bachelors Degree in Tourism studies from IGNOU soon and is planning to go for LLB next.
Siddharth Bhatnagar, 29 year old, gets the offer letter for the position of Marketing Executive. He is under trial for murder.
"I am extremely nervous. I am willing to take any type of job offer I get and this placement drive may just help me regain some of the acceptance and prestige that I lost after coming to jail," said 23-year-old Gaijaomei George Kamei. George is under trial for murder conspiracy. He was the first among inmates to receive the appointment letter. He is offered the job of Research Assistant at JRA & Associates. It is good know that criminals after completing their jail term are rehabilated by companies through jail placement. But as Vivek mentioned it is also bad to see young freshers are jobless and when jail prisonrs get jobs it is frustrating situation. Very embarrasing situation and difficult to judge.
