Hatchbacks are very popular in India and is the most favorable car choice for an average Indian. Compact size of these cars, which are also pocket-friendly, is omnipresent in India especially in the crowded metros. For automotive manufacturers as well buyers, along with price affordability, safety is also a prime concern. Here are few safest hatchbacks available in India, which have a very stumpy cost as well, that is below Rs 5.5 lakh, as listed by Zigwheels.com.



1. Maruti Suzuki A-star
Price – Rs 4.64 Lakh


Maruti Suzuki A-Star or Suzuki Alto is a small car designed by Suzuki. Its USP is its low price and good fuel economy. This hatchback is also known as the Suzuki Celerio in some other countries. The Indian market version of A-Star comes in three variants - LXi, VXi and ZXi. The top model, ZXi Opt offers Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), airbags and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and is extremely cheap as well. All these features make this hatchback one of the safest and cheapest cars in India. The 1-litre engine provides a mileage of 19kmpl which is extremely wallet-friendly.


2. Ford Figo
Price – Rs 5.02 Lakh


Ford Figo is a subcompact automobile manufactured by Ford, American multinational car manufacturer. The Ford Figo is available in both petrol and diesel versions, all with five speed manual transmissions and power steering as standard.
The 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre Duratec Titanium Diesel and Petrol variants are the best of its models, as it provides a mileage of 14-18 kmpl. The 1.2L, petrol engine delivers 71 PS of power at 6250 rpm with 102 Nm of maximum torque at 4000 rpm and the 1.4 l Duratorq (Diesel) engine generates a power of 69 ps at just 4000 rpm and a significantly outstanding torque of about 16.3 Kgm at 2000 rpm.


3. Maruti Suzuki Ritz
Price – Rs 5.23 Lakh


Maruti Suzuki Ritz or Suzuki Splash is a city car introduced in model year 2008 and jointly developed between Suzuki Motor Corporation and Adam Opel AG. Maruti Suzuki released the Splash in India as Maruti Suzuki Ritz. Among all ofits models, Ritz ZXI is the best in terms of internal safety and features. This is the top most model of petrol version with extra features like radio + CD with speakers, parcel tray, seat height adjuster, cigar lighter, tilt steering, steering wheel mounted audio controls, dual air bags, front ELR seat belt with pretensioner, etc. Its 1.2 litre engine gives 17 kmpl mileage.


4. Honda Brio
Price – Rs 5.24 Lakh


The Honda Brio is a five-door subcompact hatchback produced by the Honda in India and Thailand. Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, anti-Lock brake System, and electronic brake distribution and front pretensioner seat belts. The driver's side airbag features continuously staged inflation to accommodate a wide range of occupant positions and collision scenario. The front body is designed to absorb impact energy for better pedestrian protection. The car is certified to deliver a mileage of 18.4 kmpl.


5. Nissan Micra
Price – Rs 5.51 Lakh


Nissan Micra is available in India with four petrol and two diesel variants. The four petrol variants of Nissan Micra are: Nissan Micra XE, Nissan Micra XE Plus, Nissan Micra XL and Nissan Micra XV. All the four variants are powered by the 1.2 L, 1198 cc, petrol engine with five-speed manual transmission that delivers 76 PS of maximum power at 6000 rpmwith 104 N•m of maximum torque at 4000 rpm. The safety features of this car include Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), airbags and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
