Facebook Now a Forbidden Fruit for IITians

IIT

The Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad (IIIT-A) has banned its students and staff from accessing and using social networking site Facebook. The decision was taken after they received complaints of threat and abuse on Facebook by three of its students, as reported K Sandeep Kumar for Hindustan Times.

A notice issued by dean (student affairs) Prof RC Tripathi said “The restriction has been imposed with effect from March 1 and will remain in force for an unspecified period,” as reported by HT.

IIT-A has also cautioned its students against maintaining web blogs, saying that offensive messages on social networking sites and blogs by students are harmful to the institute's image. The premier institute has asked the students not to blog or post offensive material as it violates the code of conduct of the institute.

The notice which was also sent on emails to students, teachers and other staff members, said that it has been a matter of concern because of the offensive postings against faculty members, students and administration by some of the institute’s own students.

It also listed out the names and batches of the students against whom explicit complaints had been received regarding the same. A BTech (IT) 2011 student was accused of putting up posts threatening a girl student of biomedical engineering, while two BTech (IT) 2010 batch students were charged with using "abusive language".

For now, the students as well as faculty members have not taken the Facebook ban well.  While they agree that those who violate the code of conduct should be punished, most of them said that banning all from accessing the social networking site for an action of a few was unfair.
