Are companies sportive to allow World Cup at office?

"Cricket is a religion in India and Sachin is the God" is what every cricket fan in India would say. Cricket is that one sport that unites Indians better than any religion can ever do. With a millions of ardent followers for cricket, organizations in India have realized that they need to serve their employees' interest. But what are the measures taken to accommodate the preference of employees who are keen to watch the World Cup games?

A survey conducted by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), over 4000 people found that about 85 percent of the people would like to watch the World Cup. However every one out of five who was interested said that they were not able to do so as they did not have the facilities provided to them in their organizations. Only 5 percent of them reported having facilities provided by their employer to watch the World Cup in their place of work. Most of the employees are found planning their work schedule to finish their work as soon as possible to watch the World Cup, some of the employees are found requesting for leaves, some report sick and stay at home to watch the games and some employees have planned to work for shorter hours.

About 45 percent of Employers and those in the managerial positions said that they would give some time off to their sub-ordinates to watch the games because they share the same interests as their co-workers.
Kumar, an HR at Accenture BPO, Bangalore said that the LCD TVs which were placed on the working floors were earlier used only for playing songs, is now completely tuned and set only for the cricket channels to help employees watch live World Cup matches.

A few measures that companies can adopt as well are, firstly they have set clear policies and norms that are world cup related and that which can be enjoyed by employees. Circulate a match rooster which has only selected popular matches. The employees can then choose which match to watch. Have TVs at workplace especially in the board room and at the workshops for employees to watch specific matches. Set daily or weekly measurable milestones for employees who can take time off to watch matches once objectives are met. On the day of a big match encourage your colleagues to come to work wearing their favorite cricket team jersey. Allow flexi hours work at least for the month duration of the world cup event.

Nitin Patak, an HR Manager at iCall, Ahmadabad said "We would really enjoy the games if we were provided with LCD televisions on our working floors, the scores can be displayed on the company's Intranet. Recording of key exciting matches which can be watched post office hours to help us catch up with the games." World Cup need not be considered as just a sporting event. It can be an occasion to boost team morale and productivity as well. The event can also be a source to indulge the team members in social activities and an opportunity to build rapport with your fellow teammates.
